Lake Okeechobee Survivor Series Goes to the Dark Side
Third in the series of four to be staged in the evening
Palm Beach County, FL. (April 28, 2008) – With two of the four scheduled Lake Okeechobee
Survivor Series races under his belt, Kenny Lutz, the races’ architect, is throwing
another challenge into the mix. The July 19 event will begin in the evening and
stretch into the night.
The start, from an as-of-yet undisclosed location and time, will begin during dusk
in the Lake Okeechobee region of Palm Beach County. Lutz, careful not to give away
any planned secrets, is evasive as he describes the race’s path and the challenges
awaiting the extreme sports athletes. “The course will consist of four to six miles
of running, 10-15 miles of biking and paddling. Participants will be required to
orientate themselves using a map and compass and will have to complete various physical
and mental challenges,” Lutz said.
The previous two races, held in January and April, were unique challenges in themselves.
Mother Nature weighed in big time during the January 20 contest. A combination of
a cold front and strong winds meant a wind chill factor of 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
The fastest racer in the event took three hours and four minutes to finish. The
conditions and challenges the racers faced that day ended up with the last team
finishing in seven hours, fifty-one minutes. Many did not finish at all.
The second race on April 12 saw sunny skies, mild temperatures and excellent overall
conditions. 80 contestants slogged through the Everglades, hiked, biked, paddled
and shot along under a 1,000 foot zip line. The event was followed by the popular
Black Gold Jubilee at the finish line.
Lutz is determined to keep the specifics of the third race in the series to himself.
“I don’t intend to give anyone an advantage,” he said. The details will be published

Speculation is that this Survivor Series event will swell to over 100 racers. The
evening start suggests that participants will enjoy some relief from sweltering
summer temperatures in the Everglades and around Lake Okeechobee. However, racing,
navigating, biking, hiking, paddling and overcoming mental obstacles in the twilight
of dusk and the darkness of night will dish up unique challenges for this chapter
of the Survivor Series.
Still, the hardy flock to compete and Lutz loves throwing down the Survivor Series
gauntlet.
Individual racers as well as teams are invited to participate. Just as in previous
races, there will be special trophies for the winning Law Enforcement and Fire Department
teams. The unique alligator trophies with a bicycle sprocket in their mouths are
fast becoming much sought-after warrior souvenirs.
The Lake O Survivor Series of four races is sponsored by the Lake Okeechobee Regional
Economic (LORE) Alliance of Palm Beach County, Inc. and supported by a number of
high profile sponsors including the Palm Beach Sports Commission and The Palm Beach
County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The series of Adventure Races are part of
LORE’s overall mission to bring attention to the Lake Okeechobee area and to improve
the region’s economy and tourism trade. Pahokee, South Bay and Belle Glade will
